New Classroom Opens

Welcome Ms. Kristine Madigan, to Shoesmith School. She is the teacher in room 105 which was recently opened due to increased enrollment. Ms. Madigan completed an Academy for Urban School Leadership residency at the National Teachers Academy in a second grade classroom. Her teaching degree comes from Illinois Wesleyan University, having recently completed a Masters of Education in Instructional Leadership from the UIC.

LEGOS

4^th, 5^th and 6^th grade students participated in the Legos Project on Tuesday, October 27^th. The project utilizes Legos to teach math and science ( simple machines, forces in motion, gear ratios). Students learn mechanical vocabulary, problem solving techniques, three dimensional shapes, comparing and contrasting objects, and extending patterns as well as the skills of listening and following directions.

Making a Difference Everywhere (M.A.D.E.)

M.AD.E. IS A UNIQUE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM TAILORED FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 4-6. The program provides leadership; development through sports programs that take advantage of our youth’s love of basketball. M.A.D.E. was founded by brothers Theo and Sam Hill, both Chicago high school standouts who also enjoyed successful collegiate careers and professional careers abroad with Sam being a draft pick of NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. The program began on October 19^th and will run for 16 weeks.

After School All-Stars

The ASAS program began on October 19^th.The program hours are from 3-5 p.m. ASAS is divided into 4 week sessions. Some of the activities include: Biddy Basketball, choir, pre-cheerleading, arts and crafts, winning words, battle of the books, biking, Latin dance, floor hockey, chess, M.A.D.E., Headsprout and Lexia literacy programs and more! Afternoon snacks and homework assistance is also available.

Shirts for Sale

Orders are still being taken for polo and button down shirts with the Shoesmith label. The shirts can be either long or short sleeves and are reasonably priced at $13 and $15.00. See Mrs. Anderson for details

Report Card Pickup

The 1^st quarter report card pickup will take place on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 12:00 noon to 6:15 p.m.

Local School Council

Shoesmith’s LSC will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Wednesday, November 4 , 2009 at 5:00 p.m. You are welcome to join us.

Parent Advisory Council (PAC)

The PAC will hold its organizational meeting on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.

The LRE Mandate
