Educational Leaders of Room 106
Hello, my name is Tracy Walker and I am the third grade teacher in Room 106. I have been teaching for 12 years, 10 of which have been here at Shoesmith. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. I also have a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction as well as School Administration. I am a Hoosier girl born and raised in Indiana. I moved to Chicago 10 years ago and find the city to be very interesting. In my home life, I am married with two children. I have a 7 year old daughter named Kelsey and a 2 year old son named Jordan. My life is very hectic and busy, but very rewarding.
My name is Ashley Keine and I will be the third grade student teacher in Room 106. I recently graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Elementary Education with concentrations in Mathematics and Geography. I am currently working on my Master’s Degree in Teaching and Curriculum. This past summer I participated in a study abroad program through MSU in Cape Town, South Africa, where I taught in an elementary school for six weeks. It was a life changing experience and a great opportunity to grow as a professional educator. I am very excited for this upcoming year and look forward to everything I will learn.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to 3rd Grade! As you know, third grade is a benchmark grade. It is very important that you, the parent/guardian, keep up with the work your child is doing. If we work together, then we can ensure success.
To start the year, here are some important reminders about Room 106.
- Each child will be given a homework journal. Each day you will see my initials indicating your child has all the required assignments written down as well as needed sheets or books to complete the work.
- Each child will be given a red folder. Every Monday this folder will be sent home. Inside the folder, you will find the previous week’s tests, homework grades, and any important letters from me. You are to keep the papers, sign the parent sheet, and return the folder by Friday.
- All students must be in uniform. However, on Fridays, students are permitted to wear regular clothes.
- All students are expected to wear a gym uniform. The uniform may be purchased in the office.
- If your child is absent from school, it is imperative a note is sent to school explaining the absence.
- School starts at 8:55 and students are dismissed at 2:45. Tardiness should not be an everyday occurrence.
- All students are required to pay a student fee which covers the usage of consumable workbooks.
Thank you,
Mrs. Walker

Grading System
- Students will have homework Monday through Thursday.
- Students will have weekly spelling/vocabulary, reading skill, and math tests.
- Students can turn in homework daily, but all homework should be turned in by Friday. I don’t suggest holding all homework until Friday. Students who previously did that were missing assignments.
- Students will also be graded on participation through out the week during our lessons.
Language Arts/Reading
- Students will have homework Monday through Thursday.
- On Monday, students write spelling words 3x each and write their vocabulary flashcards.
- On Tuesday, students put their words in ABC order.
- On Wednesday, students put their spelling words in sentences. Each sentence should have a minimum of 5 words.
- On Thursday, students should study for their spelling/vocabulary and reading skill tests.
- On Friday, students will take their tests.
Math
- Students will normally have math homework Monday - Thursday.
- Students will have a weekly test on Friday that tests their knowledge on the skills they learned during the week.
Science/Social Science
- Students will have homework normally once or twice a week.
- Students will normally have a Science test and/or Social Science test every two weeks.
